Samsung Galaxy M30s design
Most of the Samsung smartphones in the Galaxy M series come with a similar design on the front. Galaxy M40 ,Review) is the only exception, which was launched with a hole-punch display. Samsung Galaxy M30s has a 6.4-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with a dewdrop notch. Samsung calls it Infinity U display. The bezels on the panel are very thin on the sides. But the bottom border is slightly wider. Samsung has moved the earpiece closer to the frame of the smartphone. It is placed just above the selfie camera. The earpiece is small. But it produces enough sound.
Samsung has placed the power and volume buttons on the right edge of the device. We liked the position of the power button. But you have to stretch a little to reach the volume buttons. The Galaxy M30S has a secondary microphone at the top. The USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone and loudspeaker are placed at the bottom. Samsung has placed the SIM tray on the left side.
Samsung Galaxy M30s has three cameras on the back. These are present in a rectangular camera module. The fingerprint sensor is also on the back, next to the camera module. Samsung has launched three color variants of Galaxy M30s in the market – Opal Black, Sapphire Blue and Purple White. We got the Sapphire Blue version for review, which has a gradient finish on the back. It looks a bit different, but we liked it. You may not like it. If you want, you can choose the black or white variant.
Samsung has given a 6,000 mAh battery in this phone. Because of this, the phone feels very big. But due to the curved edges, there is no problem in gripping it. Samsung has provided a 15 watt charger with this phone.
Samsung Galaxy M30s specifications and software
The Samsung Galaxy M30s has a 6.4-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×2340. You can choose between two colour modes. The phone defaults to Natural. We changed the display mode to Vivid which added more contrast to the screen. You can’t change the colour temperature of the screen. But we have no complaints with the default settings either.
Samsung has used its Exynos 9611 processor in the Galaxy M30S. The company has used the same processor in the recently launched Samsung Galaxy A50s Mali-G72 graphics is integrated for graphics. The smartphone is available in two variants – 64 GB storage with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage with 6 GB RAM. We have reviewed the variant with 6 GB RAM. The smartphone also has some unwanted apps. Most of these can simply be disabled. Facebook, Netflix, Galaxy Store, OneDrive and My Galaxy are pre-installed. Out of these apps, My Galaxy sends the most unwanted notifications. We had to block all the notifications.
Samsung Galaxy M30s performance and battery life
Samsung Galaxy M30s has a great display. The experience of viewing content on it was great. It gets quite bright outdoors. There is no problem in reading on it even in sunlight. The Exynos 9611 processor given in the phone gives smooth performance without any problem. We were able to navigate the menu without any stutter. The fingerprint scanner also unlocks the smartphone quickly. Face unlock is also present. It also unlocks the phone very fast.
We played PUBG Mobile on Galaxy M30S. The game ran on high preset by default. During this, the graphics quality was set to HD and the frame rate was also set to high. There were complaints of stutters in these settings, due to which the graphics quality had to be reduced. We played this game on our phone for about 20 minutes. During this time the battery consumption was 4 percent. The smartphone did not heat up too much.
The 6,000 mAh battery of Galaxy M30S lasts for a long time. In normal use, the phone’s battery lasted for about two days. The 15 watt charger provided with it charges 22 percent of the battery in 30 minutes. 43 percent charging takes place in one hour. The phone’s battery took about two and a half hours to fully charge.
Samsung Galaxy M30s cameras
Samsung Galaxy M30S has three rear cameras. The primary camera is 48 megapixels. Its aperture is f / 2.0. It is accompanied by an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with f / 2.2 lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The primary camera takes 12-megapixel shots by default. But you can also take 48-megapixel shots if you want. The camera app of the Galaxy M30S matches the camera app of the recently introduced Galaxy M and Galaxy A series handsets.
Photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy M30s were good. They looked good on the phone’s AMOLED display. Daylight shots had average detail. On zooming in, we found that text written on distant objects was readable, but they were not crisp. The phone does decent light metering. But its dynamic range is not very good. The wide-angle camera puts more information in each frame. But details are reduced compared to shots taken with the primary sensor. We also saw barrel distortion at the edges.
Photos taken in low light lacked details. Grains were clearly visible when zoomed in. Photos were brighter when using night mode. But Galaxy M30S crops the frame. This means you have to keep this in mind while taking pictures.
We found the Galaxy M30s to be a little slow to lock focus when shooting macros. This shortcoming left us with a lot of difficulty. Samsung Galaxy M40 In such a situation, you have to be a little patient. While shooting in low light, the camera takes more time to focus. In such a situation, the chances of getting blurry shots increase. After locking, the camera is successful in taking pictures with good details.
Colours are more vibrant on the AMOLED panel. But they look very natural on the computer. Portrait shots were good and the phone did a good job at edge detection. But shots taken in low light were of poor quality. There was no lack of detail in selfies taken during the day. But there is a drop in detail in low light.
You will be able to record 4K videos with the rear camera and a maximum of 1080p with the selfie camera. We found that the maximum 4K video you can record at a time is 10 minutes. Samsung has also provided a Super Steady video mode in which you can switch to the wide angle camera and it crops the frame. Videos are recorded with stabilization in low light. But the shimmer effect is clearly visible.
Our verdict
The Samsung Galaxy M30s Galaxy M30 It can be seen as an upgrade. It retains many features of the older phone, such as the crisp AMOLED display. The battery capacity is also 6,000 mAh. The Exynos 9611 processor is more powerful than the Exynos 7904. It gives performance almost at par with other processors available in this price range.
The camera on the Galaxy M30s leaves room for improvement. It is slow to focus and low light camera performance is below average.
