Motorola Edge 30 Pro Review: Flagship performance on a budget!

Motorola launched the Motorola Edge 20 series last year. The Edge series is quite premium compared to the company’s G-series and E-series budget smartphones, with the help of which Motorola also competed in this premium segment. Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro smartphones come in the segment below Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively. Now the company has launched Edge 30 Pro as an upgraded model of Edge 20 Pro, which has been brought with the aim of giving tremendous performance. Motorola has given Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in this phone. Also, the price of the phone has also been tried to be low accordingly. If you are looking for an Android phone with the most powerful processor at the lowest possible price, then is Motorola Edge 30 Pro the only option? Find out in my review.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro price in India

Motorola Edge 30 Pro The price of the phone in India is Rs 49,999 and it comes only in 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model. There is also no option to expand the storage. The company has introduced it in Cosmos Blue and Stardust White color options.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro design

Motorola Edge 30 Pro design approx. Edge 20 Pro It is similar to the . I got its Cosmos Blue option for review, which I found quite premium. The phone has a big 6.7-inch display and a small camera hole is given on the top. Thin bezels are found on the sides of the display. The back panel is made of glass with curved sides, which makes the phone comfortable to hold. The phone is quite big and weighs 196 grams, which is also felt when held in the hand. The frame of the phone is made of plastic, which does not suit a flagship phone.

The power and volume buttons of the smartphone are given on the right side and according to me they are set at a little height. The left frame of the phone is kept empty. Because the fingerprint scanner is given in the power button, I often had to pull my thumb upwards to unlock the phone. The company could have kept the power button below and the volume buttons could have been given on the left side. Only the secondary microphone is given in the top frame of the phone, while the SIM tray, primary microphone, USB Type-C port and loudspeaker are given in the bottom.

The camera module is placed in the top left corner of the rear panel. It does not protrude much, but looks beautifully integrated into the rear panel. The phone does not look raised even when placed on a flat surface. Motorola has provided a metal ring around the primary camera to protect it from scratches. The phone gets an IP52 rating, so it is dust proof and can also avoid damage due to light splashes of water.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro specifications and software

Motorola Edge 30 Pro has a 6.7-inch FullHD Plus AMOLED display, which comes with HDR10 + certification and a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. The viewing angles of the panel are good, and its brightness was sufficient when taken outdoors. The company has given DC dimming option in it, which helps in saving power by reducing the brightness. The front of the phone gets Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, which is a bit surprising, because the back panel has Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The stereo speakers in Edge 30 Pro come with support for Dolby Atmos.

The most special feature of the phone is its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. This is the most powerful processor currently available in any Android phone. iQoo 9 Pro And Samsung Galaxy S22 The same processor has been given in the series also, but the price of these smartphones is quite high.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro supports Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, 13 5G bands, NFC and six satellite navigation systems. Motorola claims that more 5G bands can also be activated through software updates. Motorola Edge 30 Pro supports two nano SIMs and supports dual 5G and dual 4G VoLTE.

The Edge 30 Pro has a 4,800mAh battery with 68W fast charging. A charger is provided in the box. It also supports wireless charging with 15W capacity. Apart from this, with 5W wireless power sharing capability, it can also charge other Qi supporting devices and accessories.

The phone runs on the company’s My UX skin based on Android 12. My unit was given the Android security patch of January 2022. The company says that apart from Android 13, the phone will also get the update of Android 14. Along with this, Android security updates will also be available for three years. Motorola’s customizations do not seem to interfere with the interface. With stock Android 12, the UI gets large toggle buttons and there is also an indicator when the camera or microphone is in use. The shape, color and font style of the icons can be customized. But, you cannot change the accent color of the UI based wallpaper. I would have liked it if this feature was there. This feature is available in Realme 9 Pro + and Google Pixel running on Android 12.

The user interface of the phone is very easy to use. Moto gestures are also supported, through which you can perform many types of actions. These include some traditional Moto gestures like double chop for flashlight toggle and double crank to launch the camera. Many more actions can also be activated for this with the help of the Moto app. I really liked its power-touch gesture. In this, on double tapping the power button, a panel appears in which shortcuts to preset contacts and apps are available. Apart from some Google apps, I found only Facebook preloaded in it and it can also be removed.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro performance and battery life

The Motorola Edge 30 Pro is the first smartphone I have used with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The processor is very fast and whenever I tried to do something on it, the activity loaded instantly. Scrolling was very smooth thanks to its 144Hz display. The phone’s AMOLED panel shows vibrant colors and the contrast is also quite good. The experience of watching videos was also good with the help of stereo speakers. One thing I noticed is that the speakers are not well balanced. The side mounted fingerprint scanner felt a bit out of reach, but was able to unlock the phone easily and accurately.

The phone scored quite well on benchmark apps. Its score on AnTuTu was 9,41,189. The phone scored 1,194 in the single-core test of Geekbench 5 and 3,542 in the multi-core test. In the Car Chase test of GFXBench, it was successful in maintaining 81 frames per second. Here I noticed that the phone was getting heated due to the load on the processor. Due to this, the battery was also draining quickly.

There was no lag while playing Call Of Duty: Mobile. The stereo speakers doubled the fun of the game. However, after 20 minutes I found that the phone got hot and the battery was also drained a lot. Looking at its benchmark test and gaming experience, I can say that the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is a very powerful processor. But its efficiency starts decreasing a bit when the load is applied.

As for the battery, the phone lasted 13 hours and 38 minutes in our HD video loop test, which is quite average performance considering its battery capacity. With normal use on a full charge, I was able to run it for a whole day. But when I used the camera and gaming, I felt the need to charge it soon. With 68W fast charging, the phone charged 78 percent in 30 minutes and was fully charged within an hour.

Motorola Edge 30 Pro cameras

The phone has three high resolution cameras, the highest resolution of which is a 60-megapixel selfie camera. There is a 50-megapixel primary camera at the rear, which comes with optical image stabilization. Its aperture is f/1.8. The secondary camera is a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, whose field of view is 114 degrees. The third sensor is a 2-megapixel depth lens.

There has been no change in the camera app. It has the same camera features that are also seen in Edge 20 Pro. With the help of dual capture, you can record videos using two cameras. An audio zoom feature is also provided in it, which focuses more on the sound of the subject when zooming on it.

Photos taken during the day have good details and this phone is quite fast in terms of focusing. The dynamic range of the photos is quite good. The primary camera and wide angle camera capture good colors, but there was a lack of details and barrel distortion was also visible.

Close up shots taken with the phone’s camera were quite good and textures were also maintained well. The phone prompts to switch to macro mode when you get too close to the subject. Since it uses a 50-megapixel camera for macro shots, the results capture a lot of detail. Edge detection was also good in portrait shots.

Low light photos were not impressive and the phone was unable to bring out details in the dark areas of the frame. It took 3 seconds to capture a photo with the night mode but highlights were missed. I preferred to take regular shots instead of night mode, as there was not much difference in details with night mode.

The photos taken with the selfie camera were quite good. Photos came out well even during the day and in low light. The phone was also able to capture selfie portraits well. The results were better when shooting in low light with an extra light source.

With the primary rear camera, Motorola Edge 30 Pro can shoot videos up to 8K. But videos can only be shot up to 4K with the selfie camera. The sharpness in the footage shot at 1080p in daylight became excessive but the 4K footage was better. Video stabilization was good. Low-light footage was also fine, but there were more grains while shooting in 4K.

Verdict

The Motorola Edge 30 Pro smartphone has come as a big upgrade over the Edge 20 Pro. It can compete in price segments higher than its price. The highlight of the phone is its processor. If the need for improvement in low-light conditions is put aside, the camera performance can also be said to be good. Motorola has increased the competition by bringing this device at a price of Rs 49,999.

However, the Edge 30 Pro falls a little short of the title of a perfect smartphone. It is powerful, so it also gets hot quickly. There was no problem in normal use, but the phone gets hot while playing 3D games. If you don’t have much problem with this, then you will like this phone a lot. But if you like to play a lot of games on the phone, then Asus ROG Phone 5s In this case, the one with slightly lower price becomes a better option.
