Apple Targets to Manufacture 25 Percent of its iPhones in India

American devices maker Apple has prepared to increase its manufacturing in India. The company aims to do 25 percent of the total manufacturing of iPhones in the country in the next three-four years. For this, a network of local vendors is being created instead of sourcing inputs from Chinese vendors.

A media Report In 2018, quoting sources aware of the company’s plans, it has been said that the bulk of Apple’s manufacturing in the country will be done by its contract manufacturer Foxconn and Tata Group’s company Tata Electronics. India is an important market for the company. By the end of last year, 14 percent of Apple’s total manufacturing of iPhones was in India. These iPhones are being exported as well as sold in the country. Apple’s target is to increase manufacturing to 25 percent by 2027 or 2028.

Most of the iPhones made in the country are manufactured by Taiwan’s Foxconn. By the end of last financial year, iPhones worth about $14 billion were made in India. In October last year, Tata Electronics bought the manufacturing plant of Wistron, another Taiwanese contract manufacturer. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max has been the best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of this year. It has surpassed Apple’s other iPhones and smartphones of South Korean consumer electronics company Samsung in sales.

According to data from market research firm Counterpoint, the second best-selling smartphone is the iPhone 15. It is followed by the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy A15 5G and A54 are at fifth, sixth and seventh positions respectively. Usually, in a quarter with low sales, the base variants of the iPhone sell more than the Pro variants. However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max being the highest sold in the last quarter is an indication of customers preferring premium smartphones more. The share of iPhone Pro models in the total revenue from Apple’s smartphones is estimated to be more than 60 percent. Earlier this year, Apple lost its position as the world’s most valuable company. The market capitalization of Microsoft, one of the big software companies, had exceeded this.
